ASC - Aquaculture Stewardship Council

Introduction and management of the standards developed for each species of fish become the main task of ASC. Its goal is to transform global aquaculture in order to increasingly meet the need for responsibly produced fish.

How you benefit

Fish consumption is growing as the need for protein-rich foods grows. Facts show that eating fish is generally healthier and more affordable, and some often argue also better for the environment, if compared to meat consumption. In addition to that, the consumers nowadays are getting more aware and demanding for responsible aquaculture. Responsible in ASC focuses on both environmental and social aspect.

• Benefits for ASC certificate holders are to maintain the market position in existing markets and tap into new ones.
• Benefits for people who depend on fish farming are to promote the responsible management of fish farms and contribute to the livelihood communities.
• Benefit for consumers is to make conscious and responsible choice easier.

What we offer

Global certification expertise: Control Union Certifications operates on a global scale and offers a wide range of certification programs of which some can be linked to ASC, such as GlobalGAP Aquaculture, EU Organic Aquaculture, MSC Chain of custody and ISO 9001.
Local expertise: our network of offices worldwide allows us to make certification more efficient and cost-effective, whilst upholding stringent the same professional auditing and certification procedures in all our offices.

What the standard look like

The ASC Standards cover the following seven principles:

  1. Legal compliance (obeying the law, the legal right to be there)
  2. Preservation of the natural environment and biodiversity
  3. Preservation of water resources
Preservation of diversity of species and wild populations (e.g., preventing escapes which could pose a threat to wild fish)
  4. Responsible use of animal feed and other resources
  5. Animal health (no unnecessary use of antibiotics and chemicals)
  6. Social responsibility (e.g. no child labour, health and safety of workers, freedom of assembly, community relations).

How to get certified

Just send us an inquiry using our contact form. We will then send you an application form for the ASC-certification program. When returning this form, we can use the information for preparing a contract for you as soon as possible. If it comes to the contract, one of our auditors will arrange an appointment for the initial on site-audit. The auditor then checks whether your company meets the requirements of the standard and documents these findings in a report. The report is then forwarded to our responsible certifier, who shall review the report and after the successful completion of the audit may issue a certificate for you.
