FSSC 22000 - Food Safety System Certification

This standard sets specifications and requirements of responsible food safety management. The specifications and requirements of the FSSC 22000 include the complete incorporation of ISO 22000, ISO 22002 and, more recently, the new ISO 22002-4, which only relates to food packaging manufactures. This has been a Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) proved scheme since February 2010. However, the scheme was re-benchmarked and recognized by GFSI again in February 2013 against Guidance Document version 6.

FSSC 22000 covers all the HACC principles, along with aspects of the ISO 22000 and prerequisite programmes (PRPs) that are described in the ISO 22002 and ISO 22002-4, which is related respectively to food and packaging manufactures.
Furthermore, FSSC 22000 guides and gives food operators the accurate tools they need. Tools which help them implement suitable assessments, procedures and actions that help to assure food safety and food safety legislation compliance.
Control Union Certification is one of the Cb’s that is accredited to certify a large range of categories of FSSC 22000 around the globe.

Correct implementation of the FSSC 22000 might result in the following:

  • Becoming GFSI approved (approval required for important retailers worldwide)
  • The organization developing its own food safety management system; always complying with the parameters stipulated in the FSCC 22000 standard
  • Improved management and communication within the organisation
  • Decrease in costs caused by withdrawals and/or recalls
  • Improved reputation and brand loyalty
  • A greater sense of confidence in disclosures by increased recognition, trust and credibility

What the standard looks like

FSSC 22000 focuses on assuring food safety by defining, evaluating and controlling risks and hazards. Issues that could have a negative effect on safety during: processing manufacturing, packaging, storage, transportation, distribution, handling or offering for sale or supply in any sector of the food chain.

This scheme is intended for the audit and certification of food safety systems, which ensure the safety of products during the manufacturing of:

  • perishable animal products (i.e. meat, poultry, eggs, dairy and fish products)
  • perishable vegetal products (i.e. packaged fresh fruits and fresh juices, preserved fruits, packaged fresh vegetables, preserved vegetables)
  • products with a long shelf life at ambient temperature (i.e. canned products, biscuits, snacks, oil, drinking water, beverages, pasta, flour, sugar, salt)
  • (bio)chemical manufacturing (food ingredients i.e. vitamins, additives and bio-cultures) but excluding technical and technological aids
  • food packaging manufacturing (i.e. direct/indirect contact with the food)

Note: included are onsite transport and storage  as they pertain to the operation (e.g. cheese ripening). The above are applicable to all organisations in the food chain within these categories, regardless of size and complexity. Whether profit-making or not, whether public or private.

How to get certified

FSSC 22000 certification has a 3-year cycle. This cycle consists of an initial two-stage audit, followed by an annual surveillance audit and ending with a re-certification audit that is carried out 3 years after the initial audit.
